New Year
by charlene
A happy and prosperous lunar new year to all who are celebrating! Gong Xi Fa Cai (?), Wan Shi Ru Yi (?)! Hong Bao Yi Ge Lai!
I hope your reunion dinner was entirely too fulfilling, as it should be :)
I haven’t celebrated Chinese New Year in many years, as I am never around family at this time. So I thought I would share the two things that I associate with this time of the year, by cheating with unrelated pictures that should still be illustrative.
Shopping…
Eating…
More shopping…
The madness that is Singapore’s Orchard Road, two nights before Christmas:
And more eating…
Killiney Kopitiam, Singapore. All the kaya toast was gone by the time I remembered to take a photo, so had to make do with just the teh tarik (tea) and kopi (coffee) in their chipped cups and plastic soup spoons.
Live Long, and Prosper.

Love the street kitchen photos, that is one of my favourite ‘asian’ things. And you can’t beat kopi and teh tarik :)
They’re my favourite Asian things too! :)
Happy New Year! The pictures of Orchard Road remind me strongly of Nathan Road in Hong Kong.
I would dearly love to be in Hong Kong for CNY. The festivities must be mad. One day perhaps.
Do i smell a leeeeetle beet of nostalgia? ;)
GONG XI FA CAI!
The closest to Asia my dinner could get is a nice bowl of Maggi I think. *sigh*
Just a teeeny bit… i mostly miss the reunion dinner part of it. I don’t miss the visiting element though, heh ;) Can’t go back during CNY though… too expensive for the married and childless, no recoup mechanism (not that I am suggesting anything here, just before you go ahead and say it!)
I’ve not been to Asia proper yet (only Chinatown in Melbourne and Sydney come close) – I can’t wait to get a chance to experience a totally different culture and way of doing things. Jay and I were thinking of eastern Thailand, on the border with Laos, as a possible destination. Wont be for a while tho – need to save up, but we’ll do it in the next year or two. Any other recommendations?
You’re asking the wrong person Charlie – i’m quite possibly the least travelled blogger around. I’d love to go to all of those places you mentioned, and Vietnam and Cambodia as well. I’d guess that you won’t be disappointed no matter where you go though, so plan away! :)
