Sea Lion, Sleeping (Carnac Island, Part 1)
by charlene
Two Fridays ago, a bunch of photographers went to Carnac Island courtesy True North Mark, who organised the event, provided transport and nibbles, and… well, everything really. Thanks Mark!
I’d never heard of Carnac Island before this, but from the chatter leading up to the day, I knew that sea lions lived there. Sea lions! Didn’t expect to see any around when we got there, so was filled with all sorts of glee when we jumped ashore and saw one basking in the sun, right where the tender boat was secured.
So i took a bunch of photos of said sleeping sea lion, the clap of the shutter causing it to crack an eye open occasionally to make sure the strange bipedal thing hopping around was still a comfortable distance away.
Sun, sand, sea, sleep… is it not the picture of contentment to you?

Great story and pics as usual Charlene!
Thanks for the link!
Cheers Mark :)
Wow. Such a cutie. Where’s all his buddies?
There were actually 3 of them in the short stretch of beach I was wandering along. This one was placed most scenically (and a particular mass of seagulls I was chasing), and wasn’t too animated, so it got the most attention. I gotta say it kinda makes you want to cosy up to that furry bulk.
Yeah, it does. Until the furry bulk turns round and bites a hole in you!
I love that top shot in the series of 4 bigger ones. His little face just poking into the frame. So sweet!
No biting needed… all it has to do is decide it wants you for a pillow to hug… eep! It is a very sweet face though. The way it cracks an eye open reminds me of the wry look I’d get from pets when I’d disturbed their afternoon siesta.
Must have been a great day! I feel relaxed just looking at him (although it almost looks like he’s crying in a couple of these shots).
Yeah I imagine the sand just stuck to the water trails running from the eyes. It was very relaxed. I could have watched it twitching through its afternoon nap all day. Never had the chance to see a sea lion up close before. I was fascinated.
It was an awesome day out. All my Fridays arvos are going to pale in comparison now, unless I get back on board tugs by some miracle!
soo cute, I adore sea lions!
:)))) There should be a few where you are now… no?
Yes he was very happy just soaking up the last few rays of the sun…what a life….
Nothing like a simple life :D
I missed this post, great to read about your excursion.
Sea lions are such wonderfully weird creatures. I think if Sea lions and Walrosses could talk they would ask to be taken back to their home planet, they really are very alien creatures looking for their spaceship (aren’t we all).
Heh! I used to think that about giraffes and elephants when I was a kid, since they have antennae and satellite dishes built in. I don’t see why sea lions and walruses can’t have carrier wave absorption capabilities to alert them of the mother ship’s presence when it arrives :D
great pics Charlene, really like that top left. isn’t it great when nature puts itself on show like this, just begging for your attention :-) especially great when you can spend a bit of time picking of shots!
Definitely! Not your run of the mill outing, this one.
Your just so clever Charlene, I love how you think and see things it’s amazing and inspiring.
That’s cause you’ve never seen me attempt landscapes Andrea…. I just don’t know how you people do it!
Aaahhhhhh we’re all envious of each other, if you can shoot what you do you can do landscapes no worries lol. Not sure that it works quite the same in reverse though.
I dunno, shooting different things requires a different sort of discipline, understanding of subject matter etc. We MUST go shoot really soon. Gotta make it happen!!
Sounds good to me Charlene, I’m keen as to go out with you again. Let me know when your free.
