I’m on Dispatches / famous!

I got interviewed for Dispatches. LISTEN TO IT HERE.

A few days before this happened, Dan emailed and said “Are you up for an interview?”

Having just emerged from Carlsbad Caverns, quite overwhelmed, I had no idea what he was talking about. Then the penny dropped. He meant a Dispatches interview.

Dispatches counts among its interviewees, people like Ron Haviv, Maggie Steber, Norman Mauskopf, Sara Terry, Moshe Rosenzveig, Darious Himes, Brian Storm, Reid Callanan, and Flemming Bo Jensen. I listen to most of them at least twice, and Reid‘s I’ve played 4 or 5 times to date.

It’s an incredible honour to be in this company.

(Have i mentioned you should listen to it here?)

I was so nervous that I have no recollection of this interview, so was surprised to hear myself speak of things that I did, as cogently as I did. Dan and I talk about what it’s like to live on the road, having to move every 3 months or so because Flemming (my creative-, business-, and life partner) don’t share a common residence. What it’s like to do the particular kind of professional work that I do, and underlining it all, what it’s like to be an outsider the various ways that I am one.

And I surprised myself by saying I thought I was going to go through life waiting to die.

It’s true though. I didn’t think I was cut out to do interesting stuff. I often still think I have no business pursuing these unknown paths. Not giving into that doubt is a work in progress.

So, forgive me stumbling over my words, and enjoy the interview.

Thanks Dan!

PS, And that rental car picture that I was taking in the second portrait?

Congrats to both you and Daniel on a very fine interview: interesting, informative, and fun. Well done, both. Am definitely looking forward to the new book and (maybe) a base camp. In the meantime, best wishes and a happy holiday season.
