Blue sky, cotton wool

Singapore

I’m continually trying to make black and white photos in Singapore. I love black and white in this light, thick with humidity and atmosphere as it always is, and the country’s spaces filled with structural geometry as they are. But it’s impossible to detract from colour for very long. When scenes like this happen, I just go with them. Singapore is a colourful place, beautifully drawn by light and material. It’s hard to fight it for very long.

I was catching up with a friend I haven’t seen in a quarter of a century (!) at this moment. We were sitting at the kopitiam across the road from where we went to school, drinking variations of kopi, when this scene materialized in front of our table. That Temptations song “My Girl” started playing in my head. I don’t know if Auntie with the cool umbrella is in fact, Uncle’s girl. But I reckon she’s bringing a bit of sunshine into someone’s cloudy day!

kopi = coffee
tiam = shop
peng = cold
